Between 26th May and 3rd June 2006 18 cadets from Glenfield attended the Annual Wing 'Greens' Camp at MOD Swynnerton. The week consisted of leadership tasks, teamwork building, confidence courses, drill competition, .22 & l98 shooting, canon running, mortar exercises, water exercises and a 'pentathalon' event. The cadets thoroughly enjoyed themselves making lots of new friends in the process. 18 cadets from Glenfield Squadron ATC went away to MOD Swynnerton for the week of the spring bank holiday, and joined 300 other cadets to undertake a tough week of teambuilding, physical and mental challenges. For the first four days the cadets, which were divided into flights of 18-20 cadets, had to complete 12 different excercises that excercised a combination of mental and physical ability. They included:

A mortar firing exercise, hitting targets on a range and adjusting trajectory and power to increase accuracy, and listening to radio instructions to hit 'blind targets'.

There was a 'Gun Run' where the flight had to dismantle a cannon mounted on two land rover axles and get them accross a river using ropes and dinghys and the complete the course to set up a firing point.

The cadets got a chance to practice their First Aid and lifesaving skills in a Casualty Evacuation excercise where actors with make-up need medical attention and evacuation to the safe zone where they could be collected for transport to the hospital. It involved going into a building filled with smoke ('theatrical' smoke with safety supervisors) to rescue the casualties.

In order to make the cadets aware of how much they rely on their senses to complete the most simple tasks, they had to complete a sensory deprivation task where they were blindfolded and had ear defenders on, so although they weren't made totally deaf, a lot of detail was taken away. They then had to follow a nightline through a course involving going through buildings and over rough terrain. Every cadet commented on how difficult the course was, and that to get a good time around the course, you had to rely solely on try to feel where you were going and that it needs a lot more concentration.

At the end of the week the camp had a Disco, where the cadets could enjoy themselves and have a good time with the new people they'd met over the week and relax from what was a very tough week for most people.

Cadets reviews of the camp are available on the forum.
